A brief history of locksmithing and locks.

Mechanical locks have been used for many thousands of years before there was even a locksmith Wirral service, originating in Ancient Egypt, where a locksmith first managed to create a simple but effective tumbler lock that was made entirely from wood.

It consisted of a wooden post that was fixed to the door, and a horizontal bolt that slid into the post, this bolt had a set of openings which were filled with the pins. A specially designed large and heavy wooden key with pegs that corresponded to the holes and pins in the lock. This key could be inserted into opening and lifted, which would move the pins and allow a security bolt to be moved to secure the door.

By a thousand years ago locks finally started improving with the technology and designs that had been introduced by both Greek and Roman locksmiths. Greek locks were commonly viewed as insecure, but they gave a lot of inspiration to the Roman locksmiths who quickly managed to improve on Greek and Egyptian locks by introducing metals as their primary material.

By using iron locks, the Romans were finally able to not only to have very strong protection against any brute-force attacks, but also keys were for the first time small enough that they could be carried in pockets, or worn as a pendant or even infused into rings.

After the Roman Empire, innovation in locks completely grounded to a halt. Locksmiths in the European dark and middle ages did not have the technology or funds to create new techniques of manufacture or new designs, but they used this time to try to confuse or comfound lockpickers with new tactics. Instead of one simple lock they created sets of multiple key mechanisms, increasingly complicated key designs, they obscured keyholes with some detailed ornaments, and also created fake keyholes (with fake mechanisms inside).

Coming right up to date, Chubbs were one of the earliest makers of the locks that Lockmate locksmith Wirral can help you with today.
