A brief history of Lockmithing and locks

Just over a thousand years ago, long before there was a locksmith Chester service, locks finally started improving with technology and designs that had been first introduced by both the Greeks and Romans. The Greek locks were commonly viewed as being of rather insecure poor design, but they gave a great deal of inspiration to the later Roman locksmiths who quickly managed to improve on both Greek and Egyptian locks.

By introducing metals as their primary construction material, using iron, the Romans were finally able to not only to have very strong protection against brute-force attacks, but also to make keys for the first time would be small enough that they could be carried in pockets, or worn as a pendant around the neck or even infused into rings.

After the Roman Empire, innovation in locks completely ground to a halt. Locksmiths in the Europe’s dark and middle ages did not have technology or funds to create any new techniques of manufacture or new designs for that matter, but they used this time to try to confuse or confound any lockpickers with new tactics. Instead of one simple lock they created sets of multiple key mechanisms, increasingly complicated key designs, they even obscured keyholes with detailed ornaments.
